February marks an exciting period in the pome fruit industry, with the Western Cape buzzing with activity as the harvest season unfolds. For us at Betko, this time is all about living up to our promise of delivering fresh, high-quality apples and pears to markets across the globe.
Recent industry updates show a promising season ahead. Apple exports are expected to rise by 5%, with varieties like Royal Gala, Cripps Pink, and Big Bucks leading the charge. Pears, too, are anticipated to perform well, with an estimated 4% increase in exports. Cooler nighttime temperatures and favourable weather have contributed to exceptional fruit quality this year. However, logistical challenges, such as operations at the port of Cape Town, remain a consideration as we move forward.
At Betko, we take pride in our role within this vibrant industry. Every crisp apple and juicy pear is the result of a seamless blend of teamwork and reliability. One of our standout tools in ensuring superior quality is our optical grading lines. These sophisticated systems use advanced imaging technology to inspect each piece of fruit with remarkable precision. Here’s how it works:
- Visual Scanning: Each apple and pear is scanned for external imperfections, such as blemishes, sunburn, or discoloration.
- Internal Quality Checks: The system also assesses internal factors like sugar levels, firmness, and ripeness to ensure every piece meets our high standards.
- Accurate Sorting: Once analysed, the fruit is sorted into categories based on size, colour, and quality. This ensures that customers—whether retailers, wholesalers, or end consumers—receive a consistent product every time.
This technology enables us to not only maintain high-quality standards but also minimize waste by ensuring every piece of fruit is directed to the most suitable market.
While optical grading plays a crucial role, quality starts in the orchard. This year, thanks to favourable growing conditions, we’ve been able to handle fruit that’s naturally of a higher calibre. Cooler nights have enhanced the fruit’s colour and reduced sunburn, while the slight delay in the harvest has allowed for optimal ripening on the trees.
In January, we were thrilled to see the arrival of Early Bon Chretien, Rosemarie, and Cheeky pears. The quality of these early varieties has been exceptional, with minimal wind marks and excellent overall appearance and taste. This strong start to the season sets a positive tone for the months ahead.
As the season progresses, we remain focused on overcoming any logistical challenges, leveraging our technology, and working closely with industry stakeholders to ensure a successful harvest for both Betko and the wider pome fruit industry.
February is a time of hard work and a solution-driven attitude at Betko, and we’re excited to share it with you. As we receive and process the fruit, our work truly begins to ensure it meets the highest standards for our customers around the world.
